Light-Filled Shaker Kitchen with a Sociable, Garden-Focused Design
Gillingham
The Client’s Brief
Mr and Mrs Breach wanted their new extension to feel light, welcoming, and practical for both everyday living and family gatherings. As a sociable couple, they wanted a kitchen that could support cooking with their grandchildren and entertaining friends while maintaining accessibility. Their passion for the garden also played a key role in the design, ensuring the kitchen connected visually and physically to the outdoors.

The Project
The new kitchen forms the centrepiece of a bright, open-plan extension that unites cooking, dining, and living into one harmonious space. Large sliding doors flood the room with natural light and open directly onto the garden, creating a seamless transition between indoors and out, perfect for summer entertaining.
At the heart of the design sits a generous island finished in Regiment Green, chosen for its subtle warmth and natural tone that ties beautifully to the surrounding greenery. The island features seating for four, providing a social hub for family interaction, and houses a combo-hob with integrated extractor for a clutter-free workspace. Overhead, soft brass pendant lighting defines the zone and enhances the inviting atmosphere.
The surrounding cabinetry balances practicality with timeless appeal – a porcelain shaker finish paired with marble-effect quartz worktops for a clean, elegant aesthetic. A mix of glazed and solid-front units offers display and storage flexibility, complemented by a bespoke bookcase niche that adds personality and everyday convenience.
Appliances include an eye-level oven with Micro Combi above, an American-style fridge-freezer, and a wine cooler, providing all the essentials for effortless entertaining. Smart internal storage and deep drawers maximise usability while keeping surfaces clear.
Finishing touches include blue-toned brick-style wall tiles, durable wood-effect LVT flooring for warmth underfoot, and under-cabinet lighting that brings depth and function to the design. The adjoining dining area, complete with a traditional wooden table and chairs, overlooks the garden – a peaceful spot for family meals and relaxed conversation.
Designed with accessibility, family connection, and comfort in mind, this project perfectly reflects the Breaches’ lifestyle – a light-filled, sociable kitchen that brings generations together.
